Job hunting in the bay area is grueling. Rent is sky high and the place isn’t what it used to be. The bus into the corporate offices is unfulfilling. Feels like herding cattle. I want something else. In my 40’s now and the gray hair is coming in. The company seems to be hiring only people between the ages of 22-27. These kids are sharp. They work 14 hours a day. It is challenging for me to stay so late, with the family and all. But if I don’t I feel like I’ll be replaced. No win situation. Then a friend told me over coffee that I should consider mentoring. “Got sacked today”, as I came home with that sad look on my face. After 22 years, you’d think they would have appreciated me more? Got zero notice. Now what? Headed out for a walk to shake off the mood and ran into a friend over drinks. We discussed the future of work in this century. It was bleak. Except for one part. That knowledge is power. And you can use that power to your advantage. That night I went home and started to write down what my talents where and how could I help others. Wanted to travel as well, as I have been stuck with the standard USA 2-weeks’ vacation per year. The world is a big place. Time to experience it. Did a google search and found a mentor. When my dad died, he always said, go follow what inspires you. In the beginning, it was hard to overcome the grief. It took time to process. The family was trying to pull each of us up. We were all kind of lost. Took time off from work, found myself in the coffee shop a lot. Saw the same people often there and decided to strike up a conversation. Asked how they could be in here each day, versus being in the office. They said anywhere there is WiFi, is there office. Kind of threw me off, but wanted to learn more. They sent me a link to a website that showed them how to do it. They have been living this lifestyle ever since. Here is the link.
